These simple fried prawns are the easiest starter or sides to serve with any meal. Sometimes referred to as masala prawn fry or masala prawn dry, it’s crunchy and delicious.
I love prawns. So do my parents. My sis Abby and brother Aaron on the other hand don’t. They can’t really, because they’re allergic. So they stay as far away from prawns and the smell of prawns as possible. Me though, I can eat as many as I like. They are so yummy!
Apart from the regular prawn curry, prawn atwan, prawn chilli fry and stuff that mom taught me to make, she also showed me how to make some yummy fried prawns at home. Goes perfect with salad as an appetizer! Or goes well with rice and dal for a whole meal. Recipe for you to try is below!
Ingredients you’ll need to fry prawns
Well, prawns of course! You can also use medium-sized shrimp if you want. And then the basic ingredients – salt, chili powder, pepper powder and turmeric powder. We add a bit of vinegar or sourlime juice for tanginess, but you can skip it if you want. Also add sojee aka semolina for crunch.

Basically, you just wash, shell and devein the prawns. Skip this step if they come pre-cleaned. You also have the option of leaving the shells on and shelling them later while eating. We love that too!
Mix all the ingredients except semolina with the prawns and leave to marinate for about 5 minutes. You can leave it for longer if you wish. Sometimes we leave it for upto half an hour. It depends.
After they’ve marinated, add in the sojee/semolina and mix well. Heat oil on a frying pan, add the prawns and allow to cook for 2 to 3 minutes on each side. Top with some chopped coriander to make it look pretty, and serve with a nice salad. You can optionally eat it with the traditional dal and turmeric rice. And that’s really it!
