Some mornings you open your eyes and the weight is already there. Yesterday’s to-do list and maybe the day before’s. The things you said you’d do, the things other people need from you, the things you expected to happen by now that didn’t, the things you’ve dropped and haven’t had time to pick back up. It’s the feeling that all the balls you’re juggling have suddenly turned to glass instead of rubber.
Overwhelm is sneaky. Sometimes it makes you feel just numb, and sometimes it keeps you scrolling on Facebook or Instagram when you should actually be getting things done. Sometimes it causes us to procrastinate. And other times, it causes us to flit from one task to the next without actually completing anything. We know we’re not lazy, but we don’t know which fire to tackle first, and sometimes we spiral. If that’s where you are, this prayer is for you.
You don’t need to have a tidy list of all the problems you’re bringing to God. Come messy. Come with the whole undifferentiated pile of it. Abba is not overwhelmed by your overwhelm, and never will be.
Psalm 61:2 says: “From the end of the earth I will cry to You, when my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” That’s the posture we need to take. Not “I have this sorted out” but “I need Abba’s higher perspective.”
That’s enough to start with.
A Prayer for When You’re Overwhelmed
Abba, I come to You because I genuinely don’t know where else to go right now. The list is so long, the energy is short, and I can feel myself starting to fracture at the edges.
First, thank You. Thank You Abba, that You are not scrambling. Thank You that from where You watch us, every piece of this is visible and none of it is a surprise. Thank You that You are the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8), which means You are steady even when I’m not.
I need that steadiness right now.
Lord, I ask You to do what only You can do. Please help me to cut through the noise and show me what actually matters today. Not everything is urgent, and not everything needs me. Help me discern the difference, and give me the grace to let go of what isn’t mine to carry.
Where I have taken on weight that belongs to other people — help me put it down without guilt. Where I’ve said yes when I should have said no — teach me to set better boundaries, gently and without resentment. Where I’m running on empty because I’ve forgotten to come to You first — forgive me, and help me rest in You and fill up with Your Spirit again.
Give me the peace that passes understanding (Philippians 4:7). Not the peace that comes from everything being resolved, but the peace that helps me to hold on to your joy right in the middle of the mess. A peace that doesn’t depend on my circumstances. That’s the one I need.
And Lord Jesus, would You please just hold me for a moment? I don’t need the answers right now. I just need to remember that I’m not doing this alone.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
After You’ve Prayed
Before you pick the list back up, take five minutes to just sit. Let the prayer settle instead of diving back in. Overwhelm tells you that stopping is wasteful; but God says that those who wait on the Lord renew their strength (Isaiah 40:31). Pausing to take a break, or a short walk, or hear a Gospel song will replenish you. (Starting a fast can be part of that reset too — different Christian fasts explains the types and what each one is actually for.)
And when you’re ready to get back to it, ask yourself one question: What is the one thing that, if I did it today, would make the most difference? Just one. Start there.
