Dr. Francis Myles says, “When a businessman wants to acquire something, he spends dollars. When God wants to acquire something, He spends a man”. Or a woman.

What does it mean to be spent?

In heaven’s economy, the currency isn’t gold, silver, or any bank balance. It’s people that Abba values above every other currency.

The scriptures shows us this again and again. When God wanted to deliver Israel, He spent Moses. When He wanted to save a nation from famine, He spent Joseph, and the years in the pit and the prison were the cost of the purchase. When Abba wanted to bring a Savior into the world, He spent a young girl named Mary, who said, “Let it be to me according to your word.”

And heaven’s greatest acquisition, the redemption of humanity, was made with the most precious currency there is, when Abba spent His own Son for us. His life for our lives.

Spending is not always comfortable. A coin that gets spent leaves our purses. It goes where it’s sent, and it doesn’t come back. It’s the same with us. We often pray to be kept safe, saved, and stored for later, but Abba isn’t looking for a hoard of Christians who promise to be useful in the next life. He’s looking for people willing to be spent right here and right now.

Picking Things Up

Being spent also means being willing to pick up what others have dropped. Elisha didn’t wait for a mantle of his own. He bent down and picked up the cloak that fell from Elijah as he was taken up to heaven (2 Kings 2:13), and it carried him into a ministry that was bigger than his mentor’s.

Some of heaven’s work sits unfinished on the ground: a prayer someone stopped praying, a ministry someone grew tired of, a calling someone walked away from, a burden that got too heavy for the one carrying it. It’s rarely glamorous and nobody is watching. But when our Abba needs something picked up, He looks for someone who will stoop like Jesus did, and who won’t ask whose job it was.

So maybe the bravest prayer we can pray is a simple one: Abba, spend me.

My Prayer

Abba Father, spend me. Spend my time on what matters to You. Spend my gifts on the people You love. Spend my words and my hands, my kitchen table and my garden walks, spend my tears and my yes. Please don’t let me sit unused in a drawer hiding my light under an bushel. If there’s something in this world You want to acquire Abba, a heart, a family, a community, a nation, let the currency You use be me. Abba, spend me.

Let my life reflect what Paul said: “I will most gladly spend and be spent for your souls” (2 Corinthians 12:15).

I was already bought with a price. The currency was the precious blood of Your Son. So I am Yours, today and always. Spend me. And let my prayer always be. Hineni, Abba. Here I am. Send me. Spend me.
