Since we’ve been young, a trip to Bandra for shopping meant we got to eat some tantalizing snack at Elco Pani Puri Centre and Restaurant on Hill Road in Bandra. Hill Road has always been a street shoppers’ paradise.

I remember coming here since I was 4 or 5, with mum and my siblings. The spot has been infamous ever since it started as a small stall in 1975, yes, way before I was born 😉

Elco Pani Puri Centre and Restaurant in Bandra, Mumbai has been serving shoppers and locals a delicious array of vegetarian Indian snacks, from sizzling hot to yummily cold.

So this time when I went shopping to Bandra with mum I finally agreed to sis’s pleas and took some pics of the food we eat at Elcos.

Now mind you, everytime we go there, we eat something different. So it will probably take a few more shopping trips to get pics of all the scrumptious mouth-watering snacks we eat there. Yay for me! I get to go there a few more times 🙂

Okay, instead of sitting downstairs this time, we decided to go upstairs and sit in the air-conditioned rooms, just so I could take a few pics.

Usually at other times we tend to sit downstairs since it is cheaper, and we get to watch the live food counters and people walking the streets.

We only go upstairs when we’re treating friends from Europe, since they somehow haven’t yet figured out how to hold their plates in their hands and eat. Well, not all of them. Just the few 😛

This is what we ordered – Yum!

Has anyone else noticed that when you know you’re going to Elco that day, you start planning what you’ll have there even when you’re having breakfast? Even if you’re going to only get there 4 or 5 hours later? Did ‘ya notice that? It happens with us. Slurrpp!

Elco's Bhel Puri is a delicious mix of sev, puffed rice, and more
Bhelpuri at Elco’s in Bandra, Mumbai

I had the bhel with that awesome sweet chutney. Lovely! And of course, halfway through I had to switch it with mum’s food. You know sharing is caring, right?

By the way, if you have bhel anywhere on the street, you know, the ones from the vendor with the big basket of things that puts it together in an instant, that’s good too.

Just a tip, avoid eating the bhel or jhalmuri with the business cards or pieces of cardboard that are offered as versatile spoons for your snack. They’re innovative, yes, but if you think of all the places those discarded business cards have been and all the hands they’ve been through before coming into yours, you might not even eat the bhel.

It’s better to use the puris themselves as your spoon before eating them. At least that’s what every smart Indian does!

Mum’s Cocktail Juice

And I just had to take a pic of the light yellow pineapple juice glass and the slightly overflowing cocktail juice glass. If you haven’t tried the cocktail juice, what on earth are you waiting for? It’s a juice made of a mix of different fruits and is a must-have anywhere in Bombay.

Dahipuri at Elco's Pani Puri center in Mumbai, India.
Dahipuri

Anyway, where was I? Yeah, mum had ordered the dahi batata puri. Again, I love the sweet taste of the chutney that marks a contrast with the spicy chilli masala and the tangy dahi. It just gets over so fast! 🙁

But no matter. I’m going to go back soon. I know sis is going to send me on another recce mission. Go there, eat bhel, eat dosa, eat pav bhaji, eat falooda, eat dahi puri, take pics! Well, who can say no? I just wish someone would pay me for this. I’d be the happiest ever. Just saying… Sis, can you hear me?

And so I did manage to go back for another escapade with my aunt and this time our treat at Elco’s was their delicious Dahi wada. So soft and tasty, this melt-in-the-mouth Dahi wada was delicious indeed.
