God’s Retaliation Against Israel’s Enemies

Have you ever noticed that anytime a nation rises against Israel, the God of Angel Armies retaliates? Have you? We’ve seen it so many times in the Bible? And we continue to see it so many times throughout modern history. In the natural, it may not seem like anything is happening. But if you really really look, you’ll see it in the world around you. The very existence of the State of Israel is proof of a covenant-keeping-God.

In the Book of Genesis 12:3, Abba says to Abraham – “I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” This promise is unchanging. And if you’re a Bible-reading Christian, you’ll literally see that throughout history, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob always protected and defended His people. And He’s not going to stop now. He will always send a Jael or a Cyrus, or He will Himself step in. Wanna see? Let’s start at the very beginning.

And just a PS, far-be-it from us to easily retain so much knowledge. This info is based on the Bible and other scholarly works, so we’ll try to add in as many reference links as possible. But if there is an error, please just leave a comment and we’ll try to fix it.

During the time of Moses and Joshua

DateEventHow God Dealt with Them aka the Result, Outcome, or Consequences
1440 BCThe Egyptian Pharaohs enslaved the Israelites (for 400 years) and refused to let them go. (Exodus Chapters 1 to 14)God sent Moses to Pharaoh with the repeated demand to ‘Let My people go’, but he refused. So God sent 10 plagues that afflicted the Egyptians, with the last plague being the death of the Egyptian first born sons including that of Pharaoh’s, after which he finally agreed to let the Israelites go. But he changed his mind again and sought to trap the Israelites at the Red Sea. God divided the sea for the Israelites to cross, and when the Egyptians pursued, they were drowned in the Red Sea.
Circa 1406 BC to 1405 BCSteeped in wickedness and immorality, the Canaanites don’t really want the Israelites aroundAfter 40 years of wandering in the wilderness, the Israelite’s reached the promised land. Moses dies in 1405 BC and Joshua is in command. Joshua sends two spies to Canaan to scope out the land (Joshua 2) and they were given shelter by Rahab. After this, Israel crosses over Jordan. Of course the local kings aren’t too pleased, and close the gates to their cities. But the Commander of the Lord’s Army gives Joshua instructions on how to defeat Jericho. (Joshua 6) After marching around the walls in silence for 6 days, the walls of Jericho fall on the seventh day of battle, and all the people and animals except the family of Rahab were killed. Similar events happened at Ai (Joshua 7-8) and Hazor (Joshua 11), and both are razed to the ground. While the destruction of these people was seen as God’s divine judgement for their wickedness, it also symbolised the fulfilment of His promise to give the land to Israel.
Circa 1406 BC to 1405 BCThe Conquest of CanaanJoshua 10 continues with several battles against local rulers, particularly the five kings of the Amorites. Joshua asked the sun to stand still over Gibeon; and the moon, in the Valley of Aijalon, and they did. This is evidence that the Lord fought for Israel (Joshua 10:12-14), and all their enemies were defeated in the great slaughter. (PS. People say there is no evidence that the sun stood still, but there are legends in many cultures of an extra long day, and the British astronomer Edward Walter Maunder’s 1908 book called The Astronomy of the Stars attempts to explain this a bit.)
1405 BCBattle at Lake MeromAfter successfully gaining control of the Southern parts of Canaan, Joshua focuses on Northern territories. (Joshua 11) King Jabin of Hazor, along with other Canaanite kings forge an alliance to fight against Israel. Joshua listened to the Lord and launched a surprise attack on the Canaanite forces at Lake Merom, defeating them all and demonstrating the fulfilment of God’s promises to Israel.
1375 BCDelivery from oppression by King Chushanrishathaim of Mesopotamia/AramIn Judges 2, after Joshua dies, the Israelites served other gods; so God delivered them into the hands of Canaanite kings. They were oppressed for eight years before turning back to God and asking for deliverance. God chose Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother to deliver them from Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia. Othniel defeated Chushanrishathaim and Israel had peace for 40 years. God always fights for His people. (Judges 3:7 -11)

During the time of the Judges

1312 BCEhud kills King Eglon of MoabIsrael falls back into sin, and so God allows Moab to oppress them for 18 years. (Judges 3:12–30) When the people cried out to God, He appoints Ehud (a left-handed Benjamite) to execute King Eglon of Moab, and destroy his armies. Israel then has rest for another 80 years. God’s ways of deliverance are unusual and unexpected.
1200 BCJudgement against SiseraUnder King Jabin of Hazor, Sisera was a military commander who oppressed the Israelites. God sent Barak to fight him with the prophetess Deborah. When the Israelite army defeated Sisera, he fled and hid in the tent of a Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite. While Sisera slept, she drove a tent peg through his head and killed him. God used a woman, one of Moses’ father-in-law’s descendants to destroy Israel’s enemy. (Judges 4 -5)
1150 BCGideon’s 300 soldiers confound the MidianitesAfter the Midianites oppress Israel for seven years, God chooses Gideon to deliver the save Israel from the hand of Midian. God reduced Gideon’s army from 32,000 soldiers to 300 and told them how to cause confusion in the camp of the Midianites leading them to destroy each other. Israel made a miraculous victory, and the Midianite army was completely defeated (Judges 6-7).

From the Time of David to the Maccabees

DateEventHow God Dealt with Them aka the Result, Outcome, or Consequences
Circa 1100 BCGod destroyed the Philistines idols and afflicted them with tumorsAfter a fierce battle at Ebenezer, the Philistines capture the Ark of the Covenant and take it back to Ashdod. The Ark is placed in the temple of the god Dagon, but his statue topples over the first night and is broken to pieces the next night. The men of Ashdod are also afflicted by tumors (supposedly in the groin region) and wanted the Ark out of their land. The Philistine lords sent the Ark to Gath, where the same thing happened. So they tried to send it to Ekron, but they didn’t accept it. Finally, they sent the Ark of the Covenant back to the people of Israel. God showed that even when His people fail or are defeated, He never does.
701 BCSeige of JerusalemThe Assyrian King Sennacherib conquered many neighboring areas and then besieged Jerusalem claiming that no god could save Jerusalem. This was during the reign of King Hezekiah of Judah, a righteous king who prayed to God for deliverance. Our God sent the prophet Isaiah to Hezekiah and he prophesied that God would protect the city. The angel of the Lord went out at night and struck down 185,000 Assyrian soldiers in their camp. When the Jewish people found the next morning was the Assyrian camp was filled with dead bodies. Sennacherib however returned to Nineveh, where he was later assassinated by his own sons. No earthly empire can stand against God’s judgement.
(2 Kings 18–19, 2 Chronicles 32, Isaiah 36–37)
586 BCNebuchadnezzar captured Jerusalem / Jews in exile in BabylonNebuchadnezzar destroys Solomon’s First Temple and burns Jerusalem to the ground. Most of the Israelites are taken into exile. Prophet Daniel prophecies the fall of Babylon (Daniel 5) and the Empire is destroyed by the Persian King Cyrus or Ahasuerus. God used this Persian king to exact judgement on Babylon for their idolatry and pride.
473 BCHaman’s PlotHaman, an advisor to King Xerxes of Persia is jealous of another advisor Mordecai, a Jew. He plots to exterminate the Jews and gets the king to issue a decree to this effect. He also plans to hang Mordecai on the gallows he has specially prepared for him. But God had already placed Esther in place to save the Jews. Unknown to anyone, Queen Esther was the niece of Mordecai, and a Jewess. She pleads with the King for her lives and the life of her people, and the Jews were granted permission to defend themselves against their enemies, and were victorious. Haman and his ten sons were hanged on the gallows they had prepared for Mordecai. God’s providential protection of the Jewish people was seen here in a foreign land. (Book of Esther)
Circa 167 to 160 BCRevolt of the MaccabeesAntiochus, King of the Seleucid Empire was trying to Hellenize the Jews by building a gymnasium just outside the Temple. He then stopped daily offerings, and desecrated the Second Temple by placing a statue of Zeus on the altar. This resulted in a revolt led by a priest called Mattathias along with his sons Judah, Eleazar, Simon, John, and Jonathan. Judah soon came to me be known as the Maccabee or the hammer, and his followers were called Maccabees. After Mattathias died in 166 BC, Judah continued the revolt, Antiochus was defeated and the temple rededicated. At the rededication, although there was not enough oil in the temple to last for more than one day, it lasted for eight days. This mystery of God’s provision and deliverance from oppressive rulers is celebrated during Hanukkah.

In the Last 2000 Years

God’s hand of protection and provision cannot always be seen, but it is always there. You just have to look with open eyes to see!

70 ADSiege of JerusalemJudaea had already been under Roman control since Pompey’s conquest 63 BC, but the people were still allowed to gather for festivals, pay the Temple taxes, and pray freely. The minor Judaean rebellions were of no effect until the “Year of the Four Emperors” in Rome, when there was turmoil and instability in Rome. In order to present his father Vespasian as an Emperor who brought stability, Titus decided a quick victory was better than a prolonged campaign. He laid siege the Jerusalem, destroyed the city, burnt down the Temple, and ended the revolt. Jewish captives were taken to Rome along with the Temple treasures. The Arch of Titus at the Via Sacra in Rome is a somber reminder of this event. God’s justice? The Roman Empire is gone. The Jews are still alive and well. They have returned to Israel and are flourishing in all arenas.
1096 to 1291 ADThe CrusadesIn 1095, Pope Urban II galvanized the military as well as the common man to fight against the Turks invading Byzantine. But these Catholic crusaders did not just fight the Muslim invaders. They also massacred Jews and other Orthodox Christian communities if they did not convert. This was one of the worst atrocities in history. Did God retaliate? In His time. All the Crusader states all fell in the end – through infighting and corruption, or through military and political defeats. In the year 2000, Pope John Paul II apologized to Muslims for the Crusades, to Jews for antisemitism, to Orthodox Christians for the sacking of Constantinople.
1478 to 1834 ADThe Spanish InquisitionKing Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella I of Spain were supposedly devout Catholics and established the Inquisition in 1478 to enforce Catholicism and eliminate heresy. Religious minorities such as conversos (converted Jews) were targeted for secretly practicing Judaism. In 1492, with the Alhambra Decree the Spanish Jews were given the choice of converting or leaving the kingdom, and many hundreds of thousands of Jews left. The ones that stayed in Spain as conversos were persecuted, and many were tortured, forced to confess under pressure, and were executed. The eventual decline of Spain’s power, including its military and economic collapse is considered to be divine retribution for persecuting the Jews.
1941 to 1945The Shoah or HolocaustHitler, under the guise of religiousness and with a Nationalist racist worldview sought to wipe out the Jewish people, who he believed to be an inferior race. Six million Jews were systematically exterminated in one of the most horrific genocides in history. The concentration camps such as Treblinka, Sobibor, Auschwitz and others still stand as stark reminders of the depravity of man. The survival of the Jewish people and the eventual establishment of the modern State of Israel in 1948 shows God’s providence and that no matter what, His covenant with Israel still stands.

After the establishment of the State of Israel

DateEventHow God Dealt with Them aka the Result, Outcome, or Consequences
15 May 1948 to 10 March 19491948 Arab-Israeli War (War of Independence)The UN Partition Plan for Palestine was accepted by the Jewish community but rejected by the Arab League. Israel declared its independence on May 14, 1948 and the surrounding Arab nations (Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Yemen) launched a military intervention to prevent the establishment of the Jewish state. The conflict resulted in Jerusalem being divided into West Jerusalem (controlled by Israel) and East Jerusalem (controlled by Jordan). And in 1949, an armistice was signed between Israel with Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. God may not have intervened but He did give His people the strength to fight.
29 October 1956 to 6 November 1956Suez Crisis (Second Arab-Israeli War)The Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser nationalized the Suez Canal in July 1956, and blockaded Israeli shipping in the Gulf of Aqaba. The canal was a vital waterway for European oil shipments. With the help of France and the UK, Israel invaded the Sinai Peninsula and regained control of the Canal. The Israeli forces captured Sharm al-Sheikh and thereby guaranteed Israeli strategic control over the Straits of Tiran. The Soviets jumped in on the Arab side. The US President Eisenhower intervened and pressurized Israel into relinquishing control over the canal to Egypt in March 1957, while maintaining their rights to ship goods along the Straits of Tiran. While Israel withdrew from Egypt, it’s military might was displayed here. Israel’s victory over a supposedly stronger Egypt seemed extraordinary and almost miraculous. And although Nasser turned his military setback into a political triumph, and became the face of Arab nationalism, God crushed him in the 1967 war and cut short his life with a heart attack in 1970.
5 June 1967 to 10 June 1967Six-Day War (Third Arab-Israeli War)Tensions between Israel and its Arab neighbors had been escalating for some time. So in May 1967, Egyptian President Nasser againt blockaded the Straits of Tiran, declared the coming destruction of Israel, and mobilized Egypt, Syria, and Jordan against Israel. So Israel launched a preemptive strike against Egypt, destroyed its air force and incapacitated its military. Then it fought Syria and captured the Golan Heights, and then took back East Jerusalem and the West Bank from Jordan.
This six day victory showed the world how powerful the Israeli military was. But the foolish UN made Israel withdraw from soe of these territories, and they will be punished for this. Result of this war? Just as Abba had humbled Pharaoh at the Red Sea, He humbled Nasser in 67, leading to his untimely death in 70. It’s said that this war was a reenactment of Asaph’s Psalm 83.
6 October to 25 October 1973Yom Kippur WarPeople make assumptions about their military prowess and attack Israel to try and gain control of lost territory. President Anwar Sadat of Egypt wanted the Sinai Peninsula back and President Hafez al-Assad of wanted the Golan Heights back. They pick a day when Israel is at it’s weakest to start the war. But God was present with His people, and Israel defeated her enemies. A few years later in 1978, the Camp David Accords took place, aimed at peace between Israel and her neighbors. Egypt and Israel signed a peace treaty in 1979.
DateEventHow God Dealt with Them aka the Result, Outcome, or Consequences
6 June to 29 September 1982Lebanon WarThe Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) launched many terror attacks in northern Israel. So Israel retaliated and invaded southern Lebanon and soon laid siege to the capital. After the PLO left Lebanon, there was a peace deal. Israel withdrew from Lebanon in 1985, but no matter how unfortunate, this war was a necessary step to weaken Israel’s enemies.
12 July to 14 Aug 2006Another Lebanon WarHezbollah, the Shiite militant group based in Lebanon had been launching rockets into the northern parts of Israel, killed 8 and captured two Israeli soldiers. So Israel was forced to go into southern Lebanon and fight back in an attempt to destroy Hezbollah’s infrastructure. Many civilians were harmed or displaced in both Israel and Lebanon. The violence was disproportionate and ended with a UN-brokered ceasefire.
God didn’t lead Israel to a victory here, but He did make them reevaluate their military strategies for future wars.
2008 to dateGaza Conflicts aka the Free Palestine MovementDuring August and September 2005, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s “Disengagement Plan” led to Israel evacuating 21 Jewish settlements in Gaza and 4 in Judaea and Samaria (West Bank). Naturally, as is written in the Bible in Joel 3:1-3, Abba said that anyone who divides Israel (accepts a Two State solution) will be judged(removed) – yes, even from among His own people. And so, Prime Minister Sharon suffered two strokes in the coming months and was replaced by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.
Of course, the conflict with Hamas has seem many skirmishes and flare ups in the past 20 years, October 7th being the worst. Those people think they’re getting 72 virgins, but no, they’re probably getting 72 demons torturing them in hell.

It’s funny that the people who chant ‘Free Palestine’ don’t know that the IDF is doing exactly that. They’re freeing the Jewish land of Palestine from the Arabs that are pretending to be Palestinians (which was originally a term used by the Greco-Romans for the Jews in 5th century.)

The answer is simple, it doesn’t matter how long Israel has to fight, they will win. God has given the land to Israel – “To your offspring I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates.” (Genesis 15:18) And when nations come against Israel, you simple have to remember, God said in Genesis 12:3 “I will bless those who bless you, and curse those who curse you.”

Hamas will be entirely destroyed. In 2025? In 2026? We don’t know. We simply know that God is the ultimate judge and defender of Israel, and no matter what, He will protect His people.

  1. I stumbled across your site a few years ago looking for a rose petal wine recipe. I’m planning to make it again and so looked your site again this evening, and was pleasantly surprised to find this post. It’s always nice to find another supporter of Israel, especially in these times when so many people have bought into the lies and propaganda put out by Israel’s enemies.

Your rose petal wine is very good by the way.
