James also said to be slow to anger.
Convenient, since patience gets tested the moment someone eats your leftovers.

James said to be doers of the word, not hearers only.
Reading the verse doesn’t count as finishing the assignment.

⚖️ Faith, Works & Favoritism (James 2)

James said faith without works is dead.
Apparently even faith is expected to show up for the job.

👅 Taming the Tongue (James 3)

James warned that the tongue is one of the hardest things to tame.
He wasn’t wrong.

No one can fully tame the tongue, James wrote.
Every parent reading that verse already knew it.

🌿 Humility & Drawing Near to God (James 4)

James said to resist the devil and submit to God.
In that order, not the other way around.

James promised that drawing near to God brings Him near to us.
A surprisingly comforting kind of math.

James warned against boasting about tomorrow. Plans are welcome, just remember who’s actually in charge of them.

James told believers to confess their sins to one another.
A tradition every generation finds a little uncomfortable.

James said the prayer of a righteous person has great power.
Grandmothers everywhere already knew this.

James doesn’t waste words. Faith that doesn’t show up in action, speech that isn’t tamed, and trials that aren’t wasted are all through-lines in this letter. While these jokes poke fun at how practical (and convicting) James can be, the book itself is a call to live out what we believe, not just talk about it.
