Jonah’s story has everything: a runaway prophet, a great fish, a storm at sea, a city that repents, and a grumpy ending. It’s no wonder it’s one of the funniest books in the Bible, without making light of its message. Here are some clean Jonah jokes and puns to brighten your day.
🐋 Jonah Runs Away (Jonah 1)
God said, “Go to Nineveh.”
Jonah said, “I think I’ll head in the exact opposite direction.”
Why didn’t Jonah enjoy cruises anymore?
The last one ended rather unexpectedly.
The sailors asked, “Does anyone know why we’re in this storm?”
Everyone slowly turned and looked at Jonah.
🌊 The Great Fish (Jonah 2)
Why was Jonah the most unforgettable passenger ever?
He was the only one picked up by a giant fish.
How long was Jonah’s all-inclusive stay?
Three days and three nights. The room service was terrible.
What did the fish say after three days?
“I’m done with prophet food.”
Jonah discovered that God’s GPS never loses signal.
Even under the sea.
The captain woke Jonah up mid-storm and asked him to pray. Turns out being wanted for a prayer meeting is still better than what came next.
🏙️ Nineveh Repents (Jonah 3)
Jonah was probably the only missionary whose audience responded better than he expected.
Jonah preached one sermon.
The whole city repented. Every pastor secretly wishes for those statistics.
Nineveh’s fast was so serious even the cattle wore sackcloth. Most committed group diet in the Bible.
🌿 Jonah’s Plant (Jonah 4)
God gave Jonah a plant for shade.
Jonah still managed to find something to complain about.
Jonah got upset that Nineveh repented. An answered prayer that ruined his day.
Jonah’s actual excuse for running was “I knew You’d be too merciful.” Worst reason to skip a mission trip in history.
Jonah proved you can run from your responsibilities…
…but you’ll probably get seasick first.
The Book of Jonah reminds us that God is patient, merciful, and able to use even reluctant people. While these jokes are meant for fun, the story itself points to God’s compassion and willingness to forgive those who turn to Him.
